STORY BEHIND THE PRINT

Paul Hoelen spends much of the year travelling around Australia photographing landscapes and teaching photography workshops. When he isn’t travelling he calls Tasmania home.

From the photographer:

West Australia is one of the flattest places on earth and in my time there I soon realised taking to the air opens up a whole new perspective in relating to the land and both nature and mans influences in shaping it.  On top of this, many of the areas are either inaccessible or restricted in their access so flying can be the best way to explore otherwise hidden beauty.

In order to photograph from the air, meticulous planning is needed. Choosing the right flight paths and time of day are critical. The only planes available to hire in some areas were some fairly beaten up old Cessna’s, and squeezing your camera through tiny window holes to shoot through small points of view between wheel and wing struts, tipped over at all sorts of angles, is not for the faint hearted or weak of stomach I can tell you!  However, it was an incredible area to photograph.

STORY BEHIND THE PRINT

Hilary Wardhaugh is a photographer from the ACT and has won a tonne of awards which has given her the prestigious title of Master photographer.

This print was taken as part of a series when she visited Iceland a trip she’d wanted to do for a long time. At age 50 it seemed like a good idea.

From the photographer:

“I needed to experience something that was different from anything I have ever done. I wanted to visit Iceland, a country so far removed in distance, temperature, light and landscape.

I experienced sunrise at 11am and sunset at 3pm, howling winds, freezing wet cold and incredibly icy that it was impossible to stand without proper spikes on my shoes.”
