Choosing your print

Our Top Tips

for choosing your print

Choosing the right print can be tricky.

Since you will be enjoying your print for years to come, you want to be sure it’s something that will look great in your home.

There are many factors to consider when making your choice, so to simplify the process, we’ve picked our top three tips to consider, starting with knowing what you like.

1. Know what you like

You’re going to be looking at this print every day, so you’ll want to choose something that you love. Have a look at different styles of art to determine your tastes. Visit galleries, art shops (like One Fine Print!), read magazines, get a feel for the kinds of aesthetics you prefer. A good indication of your preferred style usually comes from the way you decorate your home, which is a nice segue into our second tip…

2. Know where you’re putting it

Where will you be putting your masterpiece when you bring it home? Is there already art in the room? The space available will help to inform what size your print should be. A print that’s too big will crowd a room, and one that’s too small will get lost. Another thing to consider is how bold the piece will be – if it’s busy and colourful it may need more wall space to neutralise it, whereas a print featuring muted tones will happily take up more space without intruding on a room.

For more guidance on how to select the perfect spot for your print, read our previous post ‘Where do I put my print?’.

Of course, sometimes you come across a piece that you love so much you just HAVE to have it. In that case, you buy the print first and find a spot for it afterwards. While it makes it harder to blend the print in with your home, there’s nothing wrong with buying art that you love and want to see over and over.

This brings us to the last important factor in your print purchasing decision – colour.

3. Know your colour scheme

Have a look around the room you’ve chosen for your print. What are the main colours featured? What colours would complement this palette? Are you using the print to inject personality into a neutral room. Do you want the print to blend in or stand out? Answering these questions will give you a good idea of what colours to look for in your print. And that’s it.

Once you’ve bought your print and it’s safely in your custody, the next big task is hanging it. We’ve written a step by step guide on how to hang your print including some of our best tips for doing this here.
