“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” – John Muir

Snow covered trees in Hokkaido, Japan.

From the photographer, Elizabeth Bull:

I have a love affair with Japan. I travel there over and over again. Sometimes I can’t put my finger on why I love Japan so much, but I think it all comes down to its rich diversity.

I often wonder how it can be so busy, yet everyone there appears to be so calm. How can there be so much development and yet so many natural wonders. And how can it be so modern while at the same time so traditional.

I never tire of the bright lights and excitement of Tokyo, or the calmness that comes in her ancient temples. I love the speed of the Shinkansen (bullet train), but I love the slowness of the roads between the rice fields.

It is a country of stunning extremes.

For the first time recently, I travelled to Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost and least populated region.

I quickly fell in love with Hokkaido’s snow covered landscape and slow, bucolic lifestyle, which was a world away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and Osaka.

Everything about it was beautiful and wild, and just waiting to be explored.
